  • My G1325 CF tripod finally arrived on 22nd November. Tested it out at the Zoo yesterday, fantastic piece of equipment! I will be including this in my Acratech Ultimate Ballhead review.

  • Sorry for the long period of silence, I have been busy doing quite a number of things. First off, an update of what to expect in the coming weeks. I am currently coding in my spare time to add a slideshow feature to the gallery area but that's gonna take some time as there are some browser-browser complications.
  • It's sad but my Canoscan FS2710 is in the sick bay at Canon Singapore. For some reason, it is producing dull colors and poor contrast when scanning slides. I'm hoping that Canon can do something about it without having to change the entire scanner assembly (which includes the CCD and lamp!!!). I think, it should be back sometime later this week. That is also the reason why I have not been putting new photos up for the past 2 weeks -> scans take me a long time to adjust to that of what I see on the lightbox. I have also just been to the zoo over the weekend and burnt 4 rolls (2x Velvia, 1x Provia 100F and 1x Provia 400F). Hopefully I'll have something decent to show from there.
  • Tomorrow I'll be going to the bird park (since I'm on leave) and that will give me a little more workout with the Acratech Ultimate Ballhead (ATUB - thats the nick I gave it) before I start on the ATUB review that I have been promising (yes yes, I know I promised a review for the EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM as well, that will appear in due time..). Currently, I am using the ATUB on a borrowed Manfrotto 190B (thanks Darren!!) until my Gitzo G1325 arrives (hopefully) next month.

  • I have changed the gallery layout based on feedback from visitors to the site. Some have complained about the slowness and confusion caused by the film applet. I have replaced that with a simple listing of thumbnails at the top with a horizontal scrollbar which should load everything much faster while aiding navigation. I've been lazy, but will try to add more photos in the next few days, so watch this space!!

  • I got it!! The Acratech Ultimate Ballhead is here!! Initial impressions - the ballhead is incredibly light. As I was opening the box, I found myself wondering if there was anything inside!! Not having a tripod to attach to yet, I simply played with the tension knobs and the ballhead feels VERY stable!! I will post more updates later.

  • The Minds Behind the Magic. An interesting interview on the challenges that Canon engineers faced to produce the Digital IXUS 300. Beware what you wish for.. Canon is listening..
  • I finally took the plunge and ordered the Acratech ballhead last Saturday (6th Oct 2001). Was told that there is a 1.5 weeks backlog now and hopefully I will receive the ballhead by end next week or early following week. While I still do not have a decent tripod, I do intend to purchase the Gitzo G1325 carbon fibre tripod by December 2001. In the meantime, I will be loaning my friends' Manfrotto tripod, so look out for a review of the EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM together with a mini review of the Ultimate Ballhead hopefully by mid November 2001.

  • I have been looking to buy a good ballhead for a long time now. Early this month, I made the decision to get the Arca Swiss B1 as was recommended by Arthur Morris in his The Art of Bird Photography book. In the process, I stumbled upon a new ballhead that had a revolutionary design - a throughly cleanable ball with the legendary quality of the original Arca Swiss B1!! Excitedly, I emailed Arthur for his comments (together with a request for help on the tripods I was considering) and was surprised that he did not recommend the Arca Swiss B1 anymore and I quote:

"In recent years their quality control has slipped, the ballhead sticks terribly whenever it gets slightly cold or dirty, and their repair "service" is ludicrously bad at best."

The ballhead that got me so excited is the Ultimate BallHead made by Acratech.

  • I realised that it takes too long for the Lens Test/Review writeup of my Canon EF28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM to even appear (some browsers load ALL images first before showing the page) let alone load fully for those of you who do not have a fast connection. Hence, I have spilt it into a few pages to make it easier for those who have a slow connection to the internet. Additionally, I have also corrected some wrong links and modified the colours of the web links to make the text easier to read.

  • I am currently working on the Lens Test/Review writeup of my
Canon EF28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and hope to get it up in a week or 2. I have been dragging my feet too long on this since I started tests in end April 2001 (yes, yes I know..that's a long time ago with a long story as well). As such, do check back soon to read it!!
